Unlike temporal leadership, in which violence and death often proliferate, Christ’s rule signifies reunion between predator and prey, malefactors and innocents.

About This Quote

In Roman history, the punishment of a defeated enemy was one of the most horrific forms of torture. The Roman soldier would enter a conquered city and forcefully take hold of any person he saw. He then brought that person to the soldier’s camp and ordered that person to be beaten, tortured and exploited for his own pleasure. The prisoner would often be used in a public spectacle in front of the soldiers, where they would be forced to watch as their captured family member was raped, tortured and humiliated by the soldiers.

To this day, the story of Christ is the greatest example on how to treat an enemy. After Christ’s death, his followers were brutally tortured for years before they were finally put to death. Christ gave up his own life so that he could save everyone else from suffering this kind of treatment by the Romans.
